July 28, 1966--Episode 24
Jan. 11th, 2010 08:00 pmMy name is Victoria Winters.
Roger's attempted murder has created a web of uncertainty.
Carolyn comes into the restaurant with a bunch of packages and leaves them on a table, then walks out. Jonas comes in and asks about Burke's whereabouts, but Maggie doesn't know.
Carolyn talks to Joe on the pay phone about her joining him for lunch, then she goes out and orders for them both. She and Maggie are very friendly.
Maggie asks if it's Burke Carolyn is meeting for lunch, but Carolyn doesn't answer her. They talk about Burke, and Carolyn asks what Maggie's interest in Burke is. Well, he used to pose for her father when he was a kid! [I haven't written that down as many times as she's said it, but it's right up there with the conversation about the wrench.] And now her father is doing his portrait.
Carolyn, suspecting it takes longer than a couple of days to paint a portrait, is not pleased. Maggie then asks if in all the discussion of Burke if her father's name ever came up. Carolyn asks why it would have, and Maggie was just wondering.
Then Joe arrives. He wants to know what the important talk is about, and when Carolyn says Burke, he's not pleased.
Jonas has been waiting for Burke in the hotel lobby, and luckily he comes in just then. Jonas wants to talk to him in his room, and Burke tells him to go up, he'll join him when he's gotten his mail and a sandwich.
In the restaurant, Joe and Carolyn are eating their hamburgers. Carolyn is sick of the subject of Burke, so Joe tells her about a boat he found that he can afford it in a couple of months if he goes in with another guy, Jerry Gertz.
Joe brings up the subject of marriage, which causes strife between them again.
Burke comes in and orders a sandwich and coffee to go. He goes over to Joe and Carolyn's table to say hello and Joe tells him he can't sit with them.
Burke takes his food up to his room and he and Jonas talk about the accident. He's a peace-loving man, and he doesn't try to kill people.
Jonas reminds him how he threatened Roger, and Burke says that while he holds a grudge, he doesn't want to kill Roger.
Jonas asks Burke what he did that night, and Burke tells him about visiting Collinwood, then looking at the car and moving the infamous wrench--which was laying in the driver's seat.
Then he went back to the hotel, had dinner, and went to the Blue Whale to wait for Roger. He points out that if this had been his plan to kill Roger, it was a pretty lousy one, and having been caught in the garage with the wrench, he would have done something to prevent the accident, like putting the bleeder valve back, or telling Roger not to come to town.
Jonas is as unconvinced by Burke as he was by Roger and Elizabeth.
Down in the restaurant, Joe has to get back to work. Maggie comes over to deliver a message: Burke would like Carolyn to come up to his room. She adds that the constable is still there.
Up in Burke's room, Burke questions Carolyn about why he went to Collinwood: because she insisted.
Jonas says this isn't compelling evidence, and Burke says that Jonas's evidence isn't compelling either. Then Jonas tells Burke not to leave town, and leaves the room.
Carolyn accuses Burke of lying to her about only staying in town a couple of days. Burke says his plans have changed, but he was telling the truth when he said that. Carolyn doesn't believe him. After asking if Burke did try to kill her uncle, Carolyn leaves.
Then the phone rings. It's Bronson, who is in Bangor. Burke asks if he brought everything he asked for, and tells him to check into a hotel and he'll meet him in an hour and a half. "We might have even less time than I thought."
